La Clarine Farm 2017 'Sumu Kaw' Syrah, Sierra Foothills
Origin: Sierra Foothills, California (USA)
Grape(s): 100% Syrah
Tasting Notes: A translucent ruby color in the glass, the wine has very expressive aromas of berry, garrique, smoke, and white pepper. The flavors are forward and fruit driven, and finish with a flourish of tannin and notes of tar. The acidity gives the wine great focus. The Sumu Kaw 2017 vintage is a forward and friendly wine. It will age, but it's nature is built for more immediate "drink-me-now" pleasures.
Winemaking Process / Notes: The Syrah grapes were lightly foot crushed (pigéage) and fermented spontaneously with native yeast in 1 ton and 3-ton open top fermenters. Pigéage occurred twice daily throughout fermentation. At pressing, the free run wine was separated from the press wine; both factions were aged in a combination of neutral oak barrels and tank. The free run and press wine were blended together in the late summer 2019. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered and aged for 6 months in bottle before release.
